Oracle Cloud Free Tier Setup Guide: From Account Registration to Your First SSH Login

The appeal is obvious: free quota, a full-featured console, and enough flexibility for test environments, personal projects, lightweight services, or even a temporary jump box. But once you actually start, you quickly realize the hard part is not using the machine. The hard part is getting through the application flow smoothly and ending up with an instance you can really log into.

Oracle is stricter than many cloud providers. Email verification, phone verification, payment card checks, billing details, region capacity, and network settings can all become friction points. So this guide skips the myths and goes straight through the real process, step by step, from account registration to your first SSH login. If your goal is to avoid unnecessary mistakes and get a usable machine as quickly as possible, this is the path to follow.

Before You Start: Prepare Everything First

Before opening the registration page, it helps to have these things ready:

If you are using Oracle Linux, the default username is usually opc. If you are using Ubuntu, it is usually ubuntu. On the first login, SSH will ask you to confirm the fingerprint. Type yes and continue.

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

If your goal is not to study every option in the console but simply to get one free machine that actually works, this order is the most practical:

  1. Prepare real and consistent email, phone, and payment card details
  2. After account activation, confirm the region and available resources first
  3. Generate your SSH key pair in advance
  4. Choose the most basic and stable configuration for the first instance
  5. As soon as you get a public IP, test SSH access immediately
  6. After login succeeds, move on to security hardening and service deployment

This workflow keeps each step separate. If something fails, you can troubleshoot that layer directly instead of mixing registration, quota, networking, and system setup into one mess.
